In fMRI how is the magnetic field restricted to only the molecules within the blood and not other molecles?

I would like to know how come the radio frequency pulse is selectively applied to molecules in the blood and not to say other molecules in the brain OR is it applied to all of them but some statistical technique removes the signal from other molecules.
