What is MS DOS for ?

MS DOS is an operating system. All computers need an operating system to do the fundamental things like taking signals from a keyboard and putting resulting characters on the screen, and dealing with files in a filing system. The weird codes are useful for programmers doing weird things like calculating the size of folders/directories or scanning the hard disk for errors.
